Normady, France could in fact be one of the most beautiful places in all of Europe. Within
the stunning and seemingly endless network of bocage, or tall hedgerows, that line the
rolling hills of haute (upper) Normandy, you can find Domaine Familial Etienne Dupont
tucked peacefully away. Drive just a bit too fast on these winding roads and you just might
buzz past the gated entryway into the estate. This grand but modestly kept domaine dates
back three centuries to 1703 when Pierre Dupont, the first of the historic cider producers
was born.
This region of France, also known as Pays d’Auge, is home to a number of cider and calvados producers and has been for centuries. It is because this area of the world is perfect for growing small and flavor packed apples. This area of France has a unique terroir that possess the quintessential elements for cultivating cider apples. With a mineral rich soil and seemingly endless soggy climate, the 6 varieties of apples used to make Dupont’s liquids pick up a unique personality leading to the creation of a truly one of a kind line of products.
Now with the 3rd generation heir to the company, Jerome Dupont, the estate is thriving now more than ever. With the English Channel a mere 9 miles away, Domaine Familial Dupont is on what this region calls the “Route du Cidre” which marks a roughly 25 mile long loop touring the numerous cider producers in the area.
The apples are quite small but packed full of flavor are harvested at the peak of ripeness. Once pressed, the apples can go through two different processes; fermented for cider or distilled for calvados… at least that’s how it was until now…
In order to separate itself from the plethora of cider producers in the area, Domaine Dupont has broken away from traditional cider producers by developing broad and unique styles of production. Yes, they do have their signature Bouche Brut that is their traditionally made cider and is a popular choice worldwide. However, Jerome has developed styles of producing that include cider produced a la méthode champenoise in the crisp and crusty Cuvee Colette, the “ice cider” Givre is produced by freezing the side of the fermentation tank to concentrate the cider. And Pommeau, is made using a blend of Calvados and apple must.
